About Me
I was born in Lancashire and from a young age I found my passion for music through performing in rock bands and taking part in amateur musicals and plays. Those early experiences shaped my artistic journey and I embarked on my formal studies at the Royal Northern College of Music as a baritone. After completing my studies, I had the chance to portray various characters on stage, such as Sandor Barinkay in "Gypsy Baron", the Cowardly Lion in "Wizard of Oz" and Gaylord Ravenal in "Showboat".
Seeking new challenges, I moved to London to pursue further studies, this time as a tenor. Joining the chorus of Carl Rosa, I had the privilege of touring across the UK and further afield in the USA, Australia and New Zealand. I've also performed with opera companies such as Opera Holland Park, Dorset Opera, Raymond Gubbay, Birmingham Opera, and Mid-Wales Opera (when I was first introduced to Qi Gong). These experiences allowed me to immerse myself in a variety of roles, each bringing its own unique demands and opportunities for artistic expression. From embodying the spirited Tom Jones in Edward German's opera to portraying diverse characters like the Player Boy and the American tourist in "Death In Venice" at renowned festivals such as Aldeburgh and Bregenz, I constantly pushed the boundaries of my abilities and connected deeply with the music and storytelling.
A highlight in my career so far has been creating the role of Mr. Rushworth in Jonathan Dove's chamber opera "Mansfield Park" with Heritage Opera. with whom I also took on other roles including Remendado in "Carmen," Borsa in "Rigoletto," and Spoletta in "Tosca." I also created the role of Shepherd Fennel in John Whittaker's "The Three Wayfarers" with Opera Anywhere. It was a rewarding experience to be part of a new work and bring a character to life through my interpretation.
In July 2021, I had perhaps the most memorable experience of my career to date performing as The Duke of Cornwall in "King Lear" at the Grange Festival. This remarkable project, initiated by Sir John Tomlinson, Kim Begley, and Keith Warner, gathered opera luminaries including Sir Thomas Allen, Susan Bullock, Louise Alder and Emma Bell. The production garnered universal acclaim, with audiences and critics praising the exceptional cast of talented singing actors.
Beyond my operatic endeavours, I also find great joy in regularly performing as the duo Trovatori, taking our music to audiences all around the world.
I teach singing, breathwork and Qi Gong from my home studio in Ludlow, Shropshire, where I created the unique and holistic practice that I've called "Ting Song" that combines the benefits of the ancient Chinese art of Qi Gong with singing training.
